Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications and workplace experience. As an employee, you can earn as you learn and you gain practical skills from the workplace. A Modern Apprenticeship is a structured program of training and experiences that should result in nationally recognised qualifications or SVQ's (Scottish Vocational Qualifications). Some Apprenticeships are not Modern Apprenticeships and may not include qualifications as part of your employment. You should seek advice if you are not sure from Skills Development Scotland on 0845 8 502 502.
Do I have to pay anything to become an apprentice?
No. While you are on an Apprenticeship, your employer should be paying your wages and support you to undertake your training. Most of the training is ‘on the job’ within the workplace but you could attend college for day or 'block' release or a local training provider could visit you at your workplace. If you are aged 16-24, Skills Development Scotland may be meeting some of your training costs if you are a "Modern Apprentice", Click Here to visit Skills Development Scotland’s Modern Apprenticeship page.
How long does it take?
The length of an Apprenticeship varies depending on prior skills levels of the Apprentice, the qualification being obtained and industry sector. Generally, Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete.
How is learning done through an apprenticeship?
The training provider or college provides the learning framework, while the employer provides the practical experience. Training can be classroom based, in a workshop or in a workplace. If you are a Modern Apprentice you should be following a framework agreed by The Sector Skills Council for your industry, you will also be regularly assessed to ensure that you are working towards achieving your qualification.
What are the advantages of an apprenticeship for a young person?
You can start to earn while you work towards a recognised qualification. All the learning is work-related (vocational) and you will be starting in your occupation working towards gaining an SVQ.
What are the advantages of an apprenticeship for an employer?
Apprentices can bring new skills, enthusiasm and ideas into your business and in turn help motivate the rest of your staff. They can help fill skills shortages and be trained up to fill the roles that are needed, eventually becoming an integral part of your business. Employers of all company sizes support young people by offering Apprenticeships. In return, Apprentices prove to be great investments, helping increase efficiency and productivity, and providing the skills needed for the future. You can get financial support to help meet the costs of the training. As a minimum, you will have to pay The Apprentice Rate for the individual that you are employing.
Is there an age limit?
You can be an Apprentice at any age, although funding is usually only available for apprentices aged 16-19. Many employers do see the advantages of taking on older candidates so don't be put off if you are 20 or over. Adults of any age can and do become Apprentices.
